Background: 

Human Trichosanthin (TCST) is a plant toxin that can induce abortion in pregnant women.  The plant, Trichosanthes kirilowii (a member of the family Cucurbitaceae), is originated from China.  TCST is a ribosome inactivating protein. The protein has been evaluated by some research groups as an HIV inhibition drug.
